Langzeitergebnisse nach Heller-Myotomie mit anteriorer Semifundoplikatio bei Achalasie
2004
INTRODUCTION The positive success rate of cardiomyotomy in the treatment of achalasia has recently - especially in young patients - resulted in a primary operative treatment concept. Few studies of long-term effects of myotomy concerning the removal of dysphagia and the development of gastroesophageal reflux have been submitted. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the period between September 1985 and March 2003, an open, transabdominal Heller-myotomy combined with a Dor-semifundoplication was carried out in 93 patients with achalasia. 77 patients were followed for more than 6 months postoperatively (median follow-up: 70 months). The procedure was prospectively observed, and patients were questioned co…
The geometry of N=3 AdS4 in massive IIA
2018
The geometry of the ${\cal N} = 3$, SO(4)--invariant, AdS$_4$ solution of massive type IIA supergravity that uplifts from the ${\cal N} = 3 $ vacuum of $D=4$ ${\cal N} = 8$ dyonic ISO(7) supergravity is investigated. Firstly, a $D=4$, SO(4)--invariant restricted duality hierarchy is constructed and used to uplift the entire, dynamical SO(4)--invariant sector to massive type IIA. The resulting consistent uplift formulae are used to obtain a new local expression for the ${\cal N} = 3 $ AdS$_4$ solution in massive IIA and analyse its geometry. Locally, the internal $S^6$ geometry corresponds to a warped fibration of $S^2$ and a hemisphere of $S^4$. This can be regarded as a warped generalisati…
Oh, wait, O8 de Sitter may be unstable!
2021
We analyze the stability of four-dimensional de Sitter vacua constructed by compactifying massive Type IIA supergravity in the presence of two O8 sources [1]. When embedded in String Theory the first source has a clear interpretation as an O8$_-$ plane, but the second one could correspond to either an O8$_+$ plane or to an O8$_-$ plane with 16 D8-branes on top. We find that this latter solution has a tachyonic instability, corresponding to the D8-branes moving away from the O8$_-$ plane. We comment on the possible ways of distinguishing between these sources.
Highlights from the ARGO-YBJ Experiment
2012
""The ARGO-YBJ experiment at YangBaJing in Tibet (4300m a.s.l.) has been taking data with its full layout since October 2007. Here we present a few significant results obtained in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of gamma-ray emission from point-like sources (Crab Nebula, MRK 421), on the preliminary limit on the antiproton\\\/proton flux ratio, on the large-scale cosmic-ray anisotropy and on the proton-air cross-section. The performance of the detector is also discussed, and the perspectives of the experiment are outlined.""
Design and Low-Cost Implementation of an Optimally Robust Reduced-Order Rotor Flux Observer for Induction Motor Control
2007
The aim of this paper is to design and analyze reduced-order observers of the rotor flux of induction motors. The design is carried out in two steps. In the first step, a boundary of the stability region of the observation error is obtained corresponding to a chosen Lyapunov function. In the second step, the boundary is translated into a performance index that is minimized with respect to stator and rotor resistance variations and differences of voltages supplying the motor and those supplying the observer in order to obtain the largest stability region. Implementation of the observer on a low-cost fixed-point digital signal processor using look-up tables is described. Experimental results …
Linear flux observers for induction motors with quadratic Lyapunov certificates
2016
International audience; We propose a full order Linear Time-Varying (LTV) Luenberger observer for the rotor flux estimation of an induction motor. Introducing a suitable reduced-order Linear-Time-Invariant (LTI) system that is always observable and controllable, we show that any arbitrary LTI design and its quadratic Lyapunov certificates can be lifted to the higher-order original LTV dynamics obtaining the same certificates. As a result, we show that arbitrary global uniform exponential bounds can be imposed on the estimation error, regardless of the rotor speed. Then applying a suitable order reduction technique, we build a reduced observer providing the same guarantees. We also establish…
Effect of gravitational stratification on the propagation of a CME
2013
Our aim is to study the role of gravitational stratification on the propagation of CMEs. In particular, we assess how it influences the speed and shape of CMEs and under what conditions the flux rope ejection becomes a CME or when it is quenched. We ran a set of MHD simulations that adopt an eruptive initial magnetic configuration that has already been shown to be suitable for a flux rope ejection. We varied the temperature of the backgroud corona and the intensity of the initial magnetic field to tune the gravitational stratification and the amount of ejected magnetic flux. We used an automatic technique to track the expansion and the propagation of the magnetic flux rope in the MHD simula…
Anti-Atherosclerotic Effect of a Polyphenol-Rich Ingredient, Oleactiv
2018
The development of nutraceutical ingredients has risen as a nutritional solution for health prevention. This study evaluated the effects of Oleactiv®, an ingredient developed for the prevention of atherogenesis, in hypercholesterolemic hamsters. Oleactiv® is a polyphenol-rich ingredient obtained from artichoke, olive and grape extracts as part of fruit and vegetables commonly consumed within the Mediterranean diet. A total of 21 Golden Syrian hamsters were divided into three groups. The standard group (STD) was fed a normolipidemic diet for 12 weeks, while the control group (CTRL) and Oleactiv® goup (OLE) were fed a high-fat diet. After sacrifice, the aortic fatty streak area (AFSA), plasma…
Esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis: review of symptoms including upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
2001
Background Esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis (EIP) is a rare condition manifested by multiple, flask-shaped outpouchings in the wall of the esophagus, which represent dilated excretory ducts of esophageal mucous glands. Study Five patients with EIP were evaluated with regard to symptoms and concomitant diseases, as well as endoscopic, radiologic, and manometric findings. Results Primary clinical symptoms reported by the five patients (three men and two women; age range, 59–72 years) were increasing dysphagia (n = 3), upper gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 1), and no symptoms (n = 1). Concomitant diseases were chronic alcoholism (n = 3), diabetes mellitus (n = 1), and reflux esophagit…
Time pattern of gastric acidity in Barrett's esophagus.
1996
Increased gastroesophageal acid reflux is frequently found in patients with Barrett's esophagus, and it has been hypothesized that gastric acid hypersecretion could be an important factor aggravating the exposure of esophageal mucosa to acid and then contributing to the development of this disorder. The aim of the present study was to assess whether the circadian pattern of gastric acidity differs between refluxer patients with and without Barrett's esophagus and normal subjects. Continuous 24-hr gastric pH monitoring was performed in 119 healthy volunteers, 20 patients with Barrett's esophagus, 37 patients with moderate and 10 patients with severe reflux esophagitis without Barrett's esoph…
